ESTABLISHMENT AND OBJECTIVES
Taupo Life Keys is a Community Trust that was established by Taupo Baptist Church in 2005 with the objectives of :
• Providing resources for the Church to minister to its local community by seeking to meet the social, emotional, physical, spiritual and educational needs of the people of its local community. To establish such services centres, programmes and facilities which will enable the Trustees to provide appropriate community social services.
• To alleviate the difficulties of those experiencing hardships of whatever kind, including financial hardship and to bring relief through whatever means are available.
• To initiate, establish and administer community and social services for people of all ages who for any reason are in need of care or counselling or assistance.
• To carry out such other charitable purposes within New Zealand as the Trustees shall determine
STRUCTURE
The trust is governed by a trust board of five members, including the chairperson and treasurer. All trustees are approved by the eldership of the Taupo Baptist Church.
VISION
To deliver transformation for the marginalised in our community.
CURRENT FOCUS
The focus for TLKCT for the last three years has been the establishment of a Debt Management Centre in partnership with Christians Against Poverty (CAP), whose goal is ‘Lifting Kiwis out of Debt and Poverty.’
The TLKCT trustees felt that CAP’s purpose and mission of ‘Lifting Kiwis out of Debt and Poverty’ aligned very much with that of TLKCT’s vision of ‘Working with those who are marginalised.’ Financial poverty is a strong indicator of other underlying poverty such as poor health, housing, unemployment etc. (When clients first come to CAP, they have on average $9/day for food, and many families have withdrawn from their community).
The Trustees also believes that our association with CAP aligns with the Taupo District Council’s long term plan. By supporting those who are marginalized in our community we are contributing to ensure that Taupo remains a great place to live (Ninety percent of debt-free families steer clear of unmanageable debt once leaving CAP).
CAP TAUPO
Having a local Debt Management Centre means that there are caring people available to support clients as they face tremendous challenges.
Unmanageable debt goes hand in hand with other significant stressors such as addiction, mental health, relationship, unemployment and housing issues. The local support means individuals, couples and families have someone they can turn to and know that someone cares. Little things such as a food hamper, a non-judgemental listening ear can make all the difference.
• After two years of research and consultation, in March 2016 a Debt Management Centre was established by TLKCT in partnership with CAP and Taupo Baptist Church.
• The TLKCT employs a Debt Centre Manager for ten hours per week
• The Debt Centre Manager is accountable to and supervised by CAP and Taupo Baptist Church Leadership.
• Our Manager has a background in financial management and has great relational skills.
• Another volunteer has been specifically trained to run CAP Money (how to create and live on a budget).
